Information for Mothers

Women & Infants Center at Saint Mary's Hospital

Triage

If you have any issues or concerns during the pregnancy, please always call your doctor’s office first. Your doctor may have you come into the office for evaluation and/or send you to labor and delivery for evaluation.

Labor

If you are coming to the hospital for labor admission, you may want to bring the following items: change of clothes, toiletries, diaper bag, car seat, infant clothing, swaddle, breastfeeding pillow, breast pump (if received), breastfeeding bra, phone charger, insurance card, and license. You and a support person can receive meals throughout your stay.

  • Vaginal Delivery
    • Our goal is to promote a safe delivery for you and your newborn using current evidence-based practices and following quality standards of care. If you have a birth plan, our team will do their best to follow the plan all the while keeping your safety and that of your baby at the forefront.
  • C-section
    • If you need a c-section, one adult support person is allowed to accompany you to the operating room. For our c-section patients, we offer a non-opioid medication regime. By utilizing the On-Q pump system and oral non-narcotic medications, we hope to keep your pain minimized.

Postpartum

  • You will remain on our unit after your delivery but will be moved to a post-partum room. We encourage “rooming-in” in which your baby will remain with you at the bedside. We also encourage one support person to stay with you overnight.
  • Our nurses can assist you with initiating skin-to-skin contact with your baby to promote bonding and breastfeeding if you choose to do so.
  • Our nurses and our certified lactation counselor will assist you with feeding your newborn. Please see breastfeeding section for more information.

Discharge

You will have a two-night stay following a uncomplicated vaginal delivery and three-night stay after an uncomplicated cesarean section.
