Caring for Kids Cereal Drive
Did you know that 1 in 6 children may not know where they will get their next meal?
This is a matter of “food insecurity” and for the more than 12 million kids in the U.S. facing hunger, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a daily challenge.
Food insecurity simply means that a person or family lacks consistent access to enough food for an active healthy life. While food insecurity impacts all age groups, children who don’t eat are more likely to:
- Repeat a grade in elementary school
- Experience development impairments in areas like language and motor skills
- Have more social and behavioral problems
- Come from families where a parent or parents face hunger
What is the Caring for Kids Cereal Drive?
The Caring for Kids Cereal Drive is a healthy initiative where Trinity Health Of New England and Connecticut Children’s colleagues will be collecting as many boxes of cereal as possible to help fight hunger and to make a difference in the lives of the children in our communities.
Why cereal?
During the summer months, kids are not as likely to have consistent access to enough food for an active healthy life. We are collecting cereal that is both nutritious and kid-friendly for children and families who would otherwise go without the most important meal of the day – breakfast.
We have decided to do our part to fight childhood hunger and help alleviate food insecurity. We are excited to announce the Caring for Kids Cereal Drive—because breakfast doesn’t take a break.
Here is a list of healthy cereal options, this list is consistent with the current recommendations of the Environmental Working Group (6/13/19).
How does the program work?
Our goal is to raise the largest number of cereal servings. Leaders from both Trinity Health Of New England and Connecticut Children’s will work with teams at each of their hospitals and partner with local food banks to plan and execute a successful cereal drive. This is a fun and exciting way for our organizations to work together to help fight hunger. We encourage everyone to get involved and help spread the word in order to make a difference!
Here is a list of fun activities that are scheduled for the week of the Caring for Kids Cereal Drive.
How can you help?
We are looking for partners who share our mission and have a passion for giving back to the kids in our communities. Our partners will help us spread the word and encourage everyone to donate as much cereal as possible! We will be hosting kick-off events at each of our hospital’s locations to promote donations and build team spirit on Friday, June 14, 2019. If you are interested in donating to the 2019 Caring for Kids Cereal Drive or attending a kick-off event at one of our hospitals, please contact Stephanie Armelin at (860) 714-1935 or Stephanie.Armelin@TrinityHealthOfNE.org.
