About
Joseph E. Flack, III, M.D. has joined Trinity Health Of New England Medical Group at Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon. He is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery and has been in the practice of cardiac surgery for 31 years. He has been a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons since 1992.
Dr. Flack earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in 1980. He did his training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. He then spent 2 years at the National Institutes of Health, before coming to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA in 1989. He practiced there for 29 years. While there, he was intimately involved in process improvement, improving outcomes and optimizing the patient experience.
Dr. Flack’s clinical interests are in valvular, aortic surgery and multiple arterial coronary artery bypass grafting. He has been involved in aortic valve sparing root replacement and other aortic valve repair procedures since 2006. While at Baystate, he was involved with transcatheter aortic valve replacement performing over 400 cases since its FDA approval in 2011. He has used both FDA approved systems and was co-principal investigator in the recently completed low risk Medtronic Evolute Trial. He has also been involved in the treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms with minimally invasive endothoracic stent grafts since their FDA approval in 2005. He was a principal investigator in the ongoing Bolton Relay Pro Aneurysm stent trail while at Baystate. He has extensive experience in mitral repair via traditional or minimally invasive port access techniques. He also has extensive experience in coronary artery bypass grafting favoring multiple arterial conduits.
