WATERBURY, Conn. – Saint Mary’s Hospital earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. The independent national nonprofit prioritizes patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

New Grade for spring 2025 is a national recognition for commitment to patient safety.

The Spring 2025  ‘A’ grade from The Leapfrog Group represents Saint Mary’s continued commitment to putting patient safety first. “Earning an ‘A’ grade for the spring marking period from The Leapfrog Group is a testament to our dedication to safety, which is one of our Core Values,” said Robert Roose, M.D., MPH, President of Saint Mary’s Hospital.  “We take pride in maintaining a safe environment for all. Whether that is through preventing harm, nurturing patients during their time of healing, or implementing new technology or procedures to improve safety.”

Receiving an “A” grade is not an easy feat as The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization that grades general hospitals across the country on an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, and or “F” scale. The score is determined on more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries, infections and how well the hospital systems in place work to prevent these incidents from happening.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Saint Mary’s Hospital, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
