WATERBURY, Conn. (June 29, 2021) Saint Mary’s Hospital is pleased to welcome Carina Biggs, M.D., F.A.C.S. as Trauma Medical Director for the Department of Surgery. In this role Dr. Biggs will ensure that our Level 2 Trauma program meets all necessary regulatory requirements, she will oversee Quality and Process Improvement for trauma care and will serve as a liaison with local EMS, fire and police departments. An important focus for Dr. Biggs includes educational opportunities for the community about safety issues in order to reduce trauma injuries.

Board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Biggs has extensive experience in trauma care and is passionate about sharing that wealth of knowledge within our residency programs. Dr. Biggs has spent significant time in New York as an attending surgeon and the Director of Trauma and Surgical Education in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Kings County Hospital. In addition, she was the Chief of Trauma Surgery and SICU, and Trauma Medical Director at South Nassau Communities Hospital and Chief of Trauma and SICU at Wickoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

As it relates to education, Dr. Biggs received her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine and conducted general surgery residencies at Boston University Medical Center and Saint Mary’s Hospital. She furthered her specialized education as a Fellow in Gastrointestinal Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, a Breast Fellow at memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Fellowship in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

The fast paced and intense nature of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care has always appealed to Dr. Biggs, saying “you can make a huge difference in a person’s life within an hour or two.” She is excited and honored to be back in Waterbury at Saint Mary’s Hospital to help lead the Trauma Program with the goal of expanding services and employing the latest technologies and procedures.
