HARTFORD, Conn. – Board Certified and fellowship-trained comprehensive endocrine surgeon, Grace Lee, M.D., FACS, received a Focused Practice Designation in Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery from the American Board of Surgery. This newly established national certification recognizes endocrine surgeons who have focused their practice on the care of adult patients with complex thyroid and parathyroid conditions including those with benign or malignant and functional or non-functional tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. The recognition also encompasses the management of patients with locally advanced thyroid cancer, aggressive histologic subtypes and inherited endocrine syndromes.

Grace Lee, M.D., FACS, earns a Focused Practice Designation in Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery from the American Board of Surgery.

Thyroid and parathyroid surgeries are types of endocrine surgery that involve removing part or all the thyroid gland and one or more of the parathyroid glands. Located in the neck, these glands help regulate the body’s metabolism and calcium levels. These surgeries are performed for diagnostic purposes or to remove a known cancer from within the thyroid. Parathyroid surgery is most commonly performed for benign tumors of the parathyroid glands, called parathyroid adenomas.

To qualify, surgeons must submit detailed logs demonstrating expertise in the full complement of complex operations, such as advanced thyroid cancers, parathyroid disease, neck dissections, and reoperative surgeries, followed by a rigorous exam. This is the first year the American Board of Surgery has offered the designation, which aims to help patients identify surgeons who have advanced training and perform a high number of these operations annually in this highly specialized area.

Congratulations to Dr. Lee for this achievement as it further underscores the high level of surgical excellence and commitment to patient-centered cancer care at Trinity Health Of New England.
