Saint Mary's Hospital Receives 4-Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
August 1, 2024WATERBURY, Conn. -- Saint Mary’s Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received a 4-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This rating recognizes Saint Mary’s for its top-quality care, safety, and patient satisfaction. Saint Mary’s is one of only eight hospitals in Connecticut to receive four out of five stars from CMS.
CMS assigned star ratings to more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide based on their performance across five areas of quality, including:
- Mortality
- Patient experience
- Readmissions
- Safety of care
- Timely and effective care
The CMS star rating summarizes how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the U.S. The overall hospital rating ranges from 1 to 5 stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures.
“Patients have a choice when it comes to their health care. We are extremely proud to provide patients the highest quality, safest care, at the lowest cost,” said Kim Kalajainen, president, Saint Mary’s Hospital. “We understand that there are very few tools and resources available to help patients choose a hospital, but the CMS rating is a meaningful way to provide transparency and help patients understand exactly what standards their hospital of choice holds themselves up against.”
“We have worked very hard to develop a culture and practice at Saint Mary’s Hospital to always keep our focus on treating every patient as though they were our own family member,” said Husnain Kermalli, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Saint Mary’s Hospital. “I am proud of the Saint Mary’s team, and that the federal government has recognized our success in achieving that goal.”
CMS created a service, Hospital Compare, in collaboration with organizations representing consumers, hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, and other federal agencies to provide information about the quality of care at over 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals. In non-emergent situations, when patients have the opportunity to plan ahead, they can use Hospital Compare to find hospitals and compare the quality of their care to decide which hospital will best meet their health care needs.
