A registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Saint Mary’s for 5 years, Mazzetti was recognized by a patient’s family who stated that she was “very kind and accommodating to the family,” allowing each member to take part in the end of the patient’s journey despite a large crowd in the room, in the middle of the night. The family also shared that Mazzetti treated their family member with gentleness and reverence and made a concerted effort to make the end-of-life process easier on the family.

“The opportunity to make a profound impact on patients' lives during their most vulnerable moments is incredibly rewarding,” said Mazzetti. “I believe that in working with very sick patients I am able to use my critical thinking skills to save lives and help patients and families during the grieving times as well.”

Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues. Each honoree receives a certificate commending them as an “Extraordinary Nurse.” The certificate reads: “In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.” Honorees also receive a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

President and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation, Bonnie Barnes says, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet, these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human, extraordinary, compassionate work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Saint Mary’s Hospital are called on to do every day.”

The DAISY Award is found internationally in over 3,900 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing. To learn more about The DAISY Award and how to nominate a nurse visit https://www.trinityhealthofne.org/for-patients/daisy-awards.
