August 6, 2023HARTFORD, Conn. -- The world’s largest society for radiation oncology professionals recently voted to confer upon James B. Yu, M.D., M.H.S., the designation of Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (FASTRO). Dr. Yu will receive his FASTRO designation at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, October 3 in San Diego, California during the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 65th Annual Meeting.
“Dr. Yu joins an elite group of just 29 physicians and medical physicists who are recognized this year for their far-reaching contributions to the field of radiation oncology and their progress in advancing cancer research, education, and patient care,” said Geraldine M. Jacobson, M.D., MBA, MPH, FASTRO, Chair of the ASTRO Board of Directors. “Congratulations to Dr. Yu for achieving the designation of ASTRO Fellow.”
Dr. Yu began practicing at Saint Francis Hospital in March. He specializes in treating genitourinary cancers such as kidney, bladder, and prostate, central nervous system cancers, and cases requiring stereotactic radiosurgery. He also treats breast, lung, and gastrointestinal cancers. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Yu conducts research on ways to use radiotherapy treatments to improve outcomes for cancer patients, centering on the comparative effectiveness of new radiation technologies and how these technologies are adopted nationally. He evaluates and promotes the latest radiation oncology research as the deputy editor-in-chief of the ASTRO journal, Practical Radiation Oncology.
“I am grateful to my research mentors and to my partners here at Saint Francis Hospital, Johnson Memorial Hospital, and Trinity Health Of New England,” said Dr. Yu. “Together, we are bringing world class radiation treatment to the people of Connecticut. Throughout my career, I have developed an international network of collaborators with whom I can discuss the latest radiation research and bring that knowledge to our patients in order to provide them with the most innovative and state-of-the-art care.”
Awarded annually since 2006, the ASTRO Fellows program recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to radiation oncology through research, education, patient care, and/or service to the field. Since its inception, the FASTRO designation has been awarded to just 450 of ASTRO’s 10,000 members worldwide.
