HARTFORD, Conn. -- Leaders in trauma medicine from around the United States gathered at Saint Francis Hospital on Wednesday, September 6 for the 20th Annual Saint Francis Hospital Trauma Symposium: “Trauma After the Pandemic: Has Anything Changed?” The annual symposium was last held in 2019 and returned following a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We were so happy to be able to once again welcome our colleagues to Hartford for this symposium,” said Ronald Gross, M.D., F.A.C.S., Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon at Saint Francis Hospital, who also serves as Chair of the Trauma Symposium. “The trauma, surgical, and critical care programs at Saint Francis are grateful for the opportunity to help educate our peers and partners about current challenges and advancements in trauma care.”
Physicians, nurses, surgical residents, and EMS providers gathered at Saint Francis, a Level I Trauma Center, to hear from nationally and internationally known experts in the fields of trauma and prehospital care. The Keynote Speaker for this year’s symposium was Ronald Stewart, M.D., F.A.C.S, past chair and immediate past Medical Director of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.
Dr. Stewart is a trauma surgeon and currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. An award-winning physician and educator, Dr. Stewart spoke to attendees about lessons learned and opportunities for the future of trauma care.
Other presenters at the symposium included Thomas Scalea, M.D., F.A.C.S, Physician-in-Chief of the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Institute at the University of Maryland; Will Chapleau, EMT-P, RN, CEN, TSN, partner in the International PreHospital Medicine Institute; Richard Kamin, M.D., FACEP, FAEMS, Chair of the Connecticut EMS Medical Advisory Committee; Jon Krohmer, M.D., Former Director of the Office of Emergency Medical Services in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; John Quinlavin, BS, LP, President, Emergency Medical Solutions, LLC; and Manuel Moutinho, M.D., FACS, Trauma Medical Director at Saint Francis.
