Sean's Story

At Mount Sinai, you are never alone.

Sean spent several weeks at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital following a debilitating spinal cord injury that left him unable to feel his hands or feet, control movement in his limbs, or care for himself.

Through weeks of indescribable hard work and the dedicated support of our rehabilitation team, Sean made remarkable progress. He was discharged home walking short distances, participating in most of his self-care, and motivated to keep improving.

Patient safety, compassionate care, and teamwork are at the heart of everything we do. Sean’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when patients and providers work together toward recovery.

Where Recovery Takes Center Stage

Our rehabilitation hospitals feature several specialty settings to promote recovery. These include:

  • The neuro rehab gym is equipped with state-of-the-art technology specially designed for the rehabilitation of people with neurological impairments.
  • The outpatient fitness center provides patients and therapists with a variety of equipment and exercise options in an expansive, adaptable, well-lit environment.
  • The mini-bus is used as part of community-based therapy. Functionally based, treatment-oriented outings allow patients to practice maneuvering in crowded environments and overcome other barriers found outside the hospital. The mini-bus has room for four patients in wheelchairs and six ambulatory patients.
  • The speech treatment room is fully equipped to support speech therapy programs, serving patients across a wide range of abilities.
  • The SwimEx® pool at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital has several levels and stations, allowing dynamic and varied exercise capability. It distributes a constant flow of water with controlled and variable rates, allowing patients to exercise against that resistance, or walk or swim in place with therapist direction and supervision.
  • The therapeutic pool boasts 92-degree water that aids pain control and increases the elasticity of soft tissues. The buoyancy also helps with muscle re-education and builds strength. It is available at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital.
  • The terrace offers patients the opportunity to recover fine motor skills through planting and cultivating flowers and decorative plants.
  • Town Commons’ simulated environments give patients the opportunity to approach community challenges. The site includes café and park bench area, grocery store checkout counter, train depot, water fountain, telephone, ATM, crosswalk with traffic signals and even a full-sized car.
  • Cream and Two Sugars, the café at Town Commons, helps patients gain confidence while practicing situations encountered in restaurants and other service venues.
  • The transitional living apartment helps patients learn to overcome challenges they may face at home. The apartment is equipped with a kitchen, bedroom, living area and bathroom.
  • The Mandell MS Center features state-of-the-art treatments, groundbreaking research and innovative rehabilitation programs for people with multiple sclerosis and their families.

Rehabilitation Therapy at Its Best

You won’t have to travel far to experience the latest in rehabilitation technology. Trinity Health Of New England provides the latest rehabilitation innovations. Our rehabilitation centers feature sophisticated equipment that includes:

  • Armeo® helps patients regain arm and hand function via a wide range of movements and tasks using repetitive interactions in virtual environments. It’s the only technology of its kind in Connecticut.
  • Balance Master® provides assessment and retraining of the sensory and voluntary motor control of balance, assisting the patient in achieving better balance control.
  • Biodex Dynamometer is a machine that helps therapists accurately assess muscle strength, reaction time, power and joint flexibility. This device assists in designing tailored rehabilitative programs that best meet your needs. It also gives the providers data to assess your progress and ability to return to work or sports, helping to guide rehabilitation decisions.
  • Bioness® is an electrical stimulation device worn on your hand, thigh or leg to help improve muscle movement. Through electrical stimulation, Bioness retrains muscles, increases motion and blood circulation and promotes the use of extremities.
  • DIEGO® is a robotic arm and shoulder rehabilitation device for patients experiencing motoric dysfunctions. The unique overhead construction offers 3D range of movement and can be used by both mobile patients and those in wheelchairs.
  • Dynavision® is used to evaluate and treat patients through cognitive training, helping improve hand-eye coordination and reaction time.
  • The GAITRite® Mat, a portable, instrumented walkway, is used to analyze details of walking to help guide treatment decisions.
  • LiteGait® trains patients in developing a correct, sustainable walking gait. As you walk on a treadmill or across the floor, LiteGait supports body weight while also providing balance and posture. You can relearn lower body and leg movement with manually assisted leg and pelvis movement, if needed, and without concern for balance or falling.
  • Lokomat® replicates a normal gait for patients with a walking disability. Your legs are secured in special cuffs and guided along a treadmill outfitted with sensors that send feedback to computer screens. The act of walking correctly changes the brain and helps recapture function that otherwise might have been lost. The machine’s ability to retrain the brain can make dramatic and lasting improvements.
  • Omni VR® is a virtual reality platform that recreates movements in 3D, real-time, interactive environments. Patients receive enhanced feedback and motivation to improve exercise participation, repetition and duration. The system includes a variety of skilled exercise programs for physical, occupational and speech therapy applications.

Extremity Amputee RehabilitationAmputee Rehab

After upper or lower extremity (arm. forearm, hand , leg, foot or toe) amputation, you can still live a full, active life. Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital delivers nationally recognized care that maximizes your independence. Our experienced team teaches you how to navigate everyday challenges and take care of yourself. You benefit from a range of specialized therapies, along with the support you deserve.

  • Who Is Amputee Rehabilitation For?
  • These services are for people who had lost part of the leg or arm through acute trauma or surgery to remove all or part of their leg or arm (amputation) . This type of surgery may be necessary due to a life-threatening infection, severe injury or poor blood flow.

Rehabilitation after  amputation occurs in two phases:

  • Recovering from surgery and preparing for an artificial leg or arm (prosthesis)
  • Learning how to use a prosthesis and take care of your remaining (residual) leg or arm

Amputee Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital: Why Choose Us?

You benefit from highly skilled specialists who show you how to adapt to physical changes and cope with the impact on your life. Our commitment to rehabilitation excellence earned Mount Sanai recognition from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF®) for General rehab. We are among the few facilities in Connecticut with this designation.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation: You receive coordinated services from a team that cares about you as an individual. Doctors, nurses and therapists help you heal and learn new skills for daily life. You also receive emotional support from counselors and practical advice from fellow  amputees (peer mentors).
  • Family-centered approach: As your recovery progresses, we teach you and your loved ones how to keep you safe at home and avoid complications. If you live nearby, a therapist may visit your home. This visit helps our team tailor your care instructions. After discharge, a nurse visits or calls to answer questions. Explore discharge planning.
  • Excellent outcomes: At Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, people with leg or arm amputations return home as soon as it is medically safe to do so. And most families who choose Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital would recommend us to others.

Our Team Approach to Rehabilitation After Amputation

An experienced team works together to help you achieve your recovery goals and move forward with your life. Meet our physical rehabilitation team.

Our team includes:

  • Nurses who use leading care methods based on the latest research. Many of our nurses are certified in rehabilitation nursing. They provide round-the-clock care during your recovery.
  • Prosthetists who ensure you receive the appropriate leg prosthesis for your needs and teach you how to use it.

Recovering from Amputation and Preparing for Your Leg or Arm Prosthesis

During the first phase of  amputee rehabilitation, your care includes:

  • Physical therapy builds up strength and balance. Therapy also includes gentle stretches to lengthen muscles near the amputation site and preserve your range of motion.
  • Preparing your leg for a prosthesis, which may include wearing a special bandage or compression sock to prevent fluid buildup.
  • Occupational therapy teaches you how to get in and out of bed or a wheelchair safely. We also teach you how to take care of yourself, including special techniques for emptying your bladder.
  • Family support helps you and your family cope with changes in your abilities and how they may impact your future. Therapists teach your loved ones how to complete care tasks so they can become active partners in your recovery.
  • Peer mentors are a trusted source for information and encouragement about life after lower extremity amputation.

Learning How to Use Your Prosthesis

After completing phase one, you go home until your prosthesis is ready. During the second phase of rehabilitation, therapists and prosthetists teach you how to:

  • Put the prosthesis on and take it off
  • Safely get around, including walking on uneven surfaces and how to go up and down stairs particularly with a leg prosthesis
  • Take care of the skin on your residual limb and protect it from blisters
  • What to do if you fall or experience skin complications
