HARTFORD, Conn. – Saint Francis Hospital’s Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI) recently completed its 50,000th procedure, marking an incredible milestone. Since opening in 2007, CJRI has established itself as one of the premier joint replacement centers in the nation and is one of the largest in Connecticut, offering total and partial joint replacement for hips, knees, and shoulders. The milestone procedure was a total hip replacement performed by Matthew Grosso, M.D.

CJRI recently celebrated its 50,000th procedure -- Dr. Matthew Grosso performed a hip replacement on patient Kathy Casey-Ryan.

“We are so proud to have reached 50,000 joint replacement surgeries, which is a direct result of the commitment to excellence of our physicians and staff,” said Robert McAllister, M.D., Medical Director, CJRI and Chair, Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Saint Francis. “While the number is impressive, what we are proudest of is the positive impact we have had on each of those 50,000 patients. We have an incredibly passionate team that is singularly focused on providing the highest-quality care to every patient we see.”

CJRI has been nationally recognized consistently since its founding, including being named one of America’s 50 Best for Outpatient Joint Replacement and Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery by Healthgrades in their 2025 assessments. Healthgrades also awarded Saint Francis the Outpatient Joint Replacement Excellence Award, placing the hospital among the nation’s top 10 percent in the specialty, and gave Five-Star ratings in Outpatient Total Knee Replacement, Outpatient Total Hip Replacement, and Back and Neck Surgery. These achievements place Saint Francis in the upper echelon of hospitals nationally for specialty care and reflect the organization’s commitment to consistently delivering the best care possible.

CJRI was founded in 2007 by a group of 10 visionary surgeons, led by Steven Schutzer, M.D., and Dr. McAllister. The group had a vision of a new model for health care delivery and developed the “hospital within a hospital” environment, aimed at delivering high-value, comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment. CJRI remains fully dedicated to providing expert, individualized care by a collaborative team of surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, physician assistants, and case managers specially trained in the care of orthopedics and joint replacement surgery.
