Saint Francis and Hartford Yard Goats Host STOP THE BLEED® Event
May 19, 2021HARTFORD, Conn. -- Saint Francis Hospital, a member of Trinity Health Of New England, hosted a STOP THE BLEED® training event Thursday, May 20, at Dunkin’ Donuts Park during this evening’s Hartford Yard Goats game. In collaboration with the American College of Surgeons Connecticut Chapter, the large-scale STOP THE BLEED® course was available for all attendees of the game, which took place on National Stop the Bleed Day. With a goal to train every attendee in the stands that evening, it was among the largest scale STOP THE BLEED® events to date in Connecticut.
“STOP THE BLEED® is incredibly important – bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death after injury,” said David Shapiro, MD, FACS, Chief Quality Officer and trauma surgeon at Saint Francis Hospital. “The sooner bleeding is stopped, the faster patients get better. STOP THE BLEED® steps should be as familiar as ‘stop, drop, and roll’ or CPR for cardiac arrest.”
STOP THE BLEED® is the result of a collaborative effort led by the Hartford Consensus and the American College of Surgeons to bring empowerment and education about bleeding control to the public. The course is intended to teach bystanders how to initiate care for bleeding after contacting 911. Most bleeding can be controlled with the steps taught at the course.
Saint Francis Hospital, an American College of Surgeons Verified Level I Trauma Program, will provide STOP THE BLEED® courses to the community without cost. For more information, please visit www.TrinityHealthOfNE.org/StoptheBleed.
