Summer Safety Tips
July 14, 2022
For many of us, the lazy, hazy days of summer mean more time spent outdoors to enjoy activities with family and friends. Being out in the sunshine, hiking in the woods, or taking a dip in a pool are a few of the things that make summertime so special. Even so, the hot weather can also bring some unique challenges to your health and safety.
It really comes down to making healthy choices. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are a few things you can do ensure your health and safety.
- Get outdoors and move – The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of aerobic physical activity every week. You'll reap immediate benefits from even a single episode of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, including better sleep, reduced anxiety, and lower blood pressure.
- Protect your skin with sunscreen and insect repellant – Select broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for sun protection. Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent mosquito bites and ticks. Pro-tip: If you use both sunscreen and insect repellant, apply sunscreen first. And after you come back indoors, check your clothing, body, and pets for ticks.
- Keep your cool in extreme heat – Extreme heat can be especially dangerous for individuals with chronic medical conditions. When the temperatures soar, stay cool with fans or air conditioning, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and keep an eye on the weather forecast for changing conditions.
- Eat a healthy diet – The increased availability of fresh fruits and vegetables during the summer months make it easier to enjoy the benefits of a healthy diet, which include boosting immunity; strengthening bones; lowering risk for heart disease, type 2 diabestes, and some cancers; and supporting digestion.
These tips are just a few ways you can make the summer months more enjoyable for you and your family. Remember, safety first! For more information from the CDC, click here.
