COVID-19 changed our lives in so many ways as terms like social distancing, remote learning, and vaccination cards made their way into the lexicon. Now, as more individuals have returned to the workplace and classroom, the stresses of everyday life can seem overwhelming, especially when coupled with the lingering impact of the pandemic.

Spending time in nature has long been viewed as a positive way to reduce stress and improve well-being. "As humans, we are hardwired to enjoy nature. Sensory stimulation by nature (green and blue spaces) can reduce stress by helping our brain re-focus," said Dr. Edna Rodríguez, PsyD, Director of Behavioral Health, Mercy Medical Center. "And, because spending time in nature helps the human brain improve its ability to pay attention and concentrate, it has the potent effect of reducing stress and bringing a sense of calmness."

Clearly, these are significant benefits. Despite the current cold weather, it's a perfect time to enjoy all that nature has to offer with a walk in the woods.

"Forest bathing" is not a new concept. It was promoted in Japan in the early 1980's as a form of mobile meditation to be done under a living canopy of leaves, and it eventually was included as part of the country's national health program. In short, "forest bathing" (or shinrin-yoku) refers to using all of one's senses, without any interruptions, to enjoy a forest setting. The practice is much more than a walk in the park, it involves consciously taking in all the sights, sounds, and smells of the environmental setting.

"Forest bathing," or simply spending some time in nature, can have a tremendous impact on your life. "It reminds us that we are a part of a bigger universe, that we are not alone. It can reduce feelings of isolation and increase experiences of joy and happiness, all of which improve our spiritual wellbeing," said Dr. Rodríguez. She also notes experts have found that spending a total of two hours a week in nature not only has an overall positive impact on attention and concentration, it also "increases a sense of satisfaction and love that renews energies and will help us cope with our daily demands."

So, what are you waiting for? Grab your coat and hat and head for the great outdoors! And perhaps the best part about "forest bathing" is that you can do it any time for as long as you like. Just remember to bring your compass…
