Sisters of Saint Joseph Legacy Week Celebrated at Saint Mary’s Hospital
March 18, 2026Categories: Awards and Recognition
Saint Mary’s Hospital opened its doors 117 years ago in 1909 under the direction of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry. Their dedication to service, compassion and healing laid the foundation for the culture that still guides the hospital today. Each March, colleagues honor the hospital’s heritage through an award ceremony, a Mass on the Feast of Saint Joseph, and the distribution of zeppoles.

A central part of Legacy Week is the presentation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph Legacy Awards, which recognize colleagues who best exemplify the hospital’s founding mission. Recipients are honored for being a compassionate, healing and supportive presence to patients, visitors and fellow colleagues, without distinction.
This year, four colleagues were selected for this prestigious recognition. Kathleen Bowen was nominated by Melinda Marino for being a “bright light” in her role as an Authorization Denial Specialist at Saint Mary’s Oncology. “Whether it’s helping a colleague, supporting a patient’s care, or stepping into a new task, Katie gives her whole heart to her work,” said Melinda.
Bethany Crafa, LPN, in Behavioral Health, was nominated by Derri Hamilton for her steady compassion and strong advocacy for those in her care. “She goes beyond her clinical responsibilities to help address the real-life struggles our patients face, demonstrating genuine care and humanity,” wrote Derri.
Katie Giroux, RN, in the Emergency Department, was nominated by Leah Knecht, who read her nomination letter during the ceremony. “Katie is a fierce advocate for patients who cannot advocate for themselves,” said Leah. “She stands up for safety, for dignity, and for doing what is right even when it is inconvenient or difficult.” Katie’s mother, Laurie Paoletto, RN, who also serves in the Emergency Department and is a previous recipient of the Legacy Award, proudly presented her daughter with the recognition.
Edgar Rosado, from Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center, was nominated by Renee Smith for the kindness, support and professionalism he brings to his role each day. “He not only lives the Mission and Core Values of the Sisters of Saint Joseph but also inspires those around him to do the same. He is a shining example of what it means to serve with purpose, heart, and unwavering dedication,” said Renee.
Legacy Week also includes a Mass celebrated on the Feast of Saint Joseph. This Mass offers time for reflection, prayer and appreciation of the values that continue to guide the work of the hospital community.
No Legacy Week would be complete without a beloved treat. As part of the celebration, colleagues enjoyed complimentary zeppoles in honor of Saint Joseph’s Day. This sweet tradition brings colleagues together and adds a joyful touch to a week devoted to gratitude and remembrance. Colleagues at Saint Francis Hospital, founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1897, were also treated to zeppoles to celebrate Saint Joseph’s Day.
