Emery Pelletier, RN, Maternity, was recently honored with a DAISY Award for making a difference in the lives of her patients and their families.

Emery was nominated by a patient who spent several weeks under her care. The nomination form states, “during that time, Emery was truly a lifesaver.” The submission continued to say that she “went out of her way to share stories of her own childbirth experience to help calm me down,” and that Emery, “made me feel so seen and so valued – I know she had a full rotation of patients, but she never made me feel like she needed to rush out or get elsewhere. She treated me like I was the most important human on earth, which is one of the reasons I was able to handle being in the hospital for those weeks so well.” The patient described how Emery made it a point to check in at the beginning and end of every shift, and even left notes on the whiteboard to help the patient focus on breathing and staying calm.

The conclusion of Emery’s nomination said, “so many times it’s easy to feel like ‘just another patient’ when it comes to doctors and nurses, but Emery always made me feel so important. I’ll never forget her kindness and compassion during the most challenging weeks of my life – I am forever grateful she was assigned to me that first day!”

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, his family deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. After he passed, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a public way.
