Saint Francis Electrophysiology Lab Completes 350th PulseSelect Procedure
December 8, 2025Categories: Awards and Recognition
Earlier this month, the Saint Francis Hospital Electrophysiology Lab completed its 350th PulseSelect pulsed field ablation (PFA) case, marking an important milestone for the Electrophysiology Program. PFA is a breakthrough technology that uses pulsed electric fields to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib). William Gionfriddo, MD, Associate Chief of Cardiac Electrophysiology, treated the first patient at Saint Francis with PFA in November 2024.

Pulsed field ablation is an advanced technology used to treat atrial fibrillation.
Individually, Dr. Gionfriddo has completed over 200 PulseSelect cases, the most of any provider in the region. The team also includes Ankit Mahajan, MD; Ricardo Avendano, MD; John Marenco, MD; and William Perucki, MD, along with lab personnel, clinical providers, and support team members.
AFib is a progressive condition that affects more than 59 million people worldwide, and can cause symptoms like heart palpitations, fatigue and shortness of breath. Without early intervention, AFib can progress, resulting in a higher rate of cardiovascular-related hospital admissions, heart failure and mortality, along with a reduced quality of life. The PulseSelect PFA system delivers pulsed electric fields through an ablation catheter designed specifically to interrupt irregular electrical pathways in the heart that trigger AFib.
Reaching 350 cases is a testament to the Saint Francis team’s dedication to clinical excellence, adaptability in adopting new technology with a commitment to innovative, patient-centered cardiac care, and the ongoing focus on patient safety. The team looks forward to continuing to expand its experience and positively impact the lives of the patients they serve.
