Saint Mary’s Hospital’s Sacred Heart 3 (SH3) unit recently received the inaugural Guardians of Care Safety Award. The award reflects the team’s dedication to patient safety, teamwork and vigilance, leading to the achievement of six consecutive months without a patient fall.

Leadership and SH3 celebrate the Guardians of Care Award.

From January through June 2025, the SH3 team went above and beyond by implementing proactive interventions, consistent rounding, and a culture of collaboration that prioritized patient well-being.

“Your dedication, vigilance, and commitment to patient safety have made a real difference—and it shows!” said Zina Ruban, DNP, RN-BC, ACM, Director of Operations, Patient Care Services in her nomination message. “Every intervention, rounding effort, and moment of teamwork contributed to this success. Your proactive approach and attention to detail have not only improved outcomes but also reinforced the culture of safety we strive for every day.”

The award was presented to the team by Shawna Edwards, DNP, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer; Stephanie Nelson, MSN, RN, Director of Clinical Quality and Patient Safety; Kim Cohen, RN, Performance Improvement Specialist; and Ruban in an intimate and heartfelt recognition ceremony on the unit. The Guardians of Care Safety Award, which has four swirls intertwined in the center to represent the importance of being stronger together, is a tangible reminder of the team’s fantastic work.
