Saint Mary’s ED Physician Recognized by Waterbury Police Department

Wesley Kyle, MD, Director, Emergency Medical Services, Saint Mary’s Hospital, received a “Certificate of Recognition” from the Waterbury Police Department on April 22, for a “shots fired incident” that occurred at the Brass Mill Center Mall in May 2025. According to Waterbury Police, Dr. Kyle was recognized for his role in skillfully managing the incident that included several gunshot victims. Dr. Kyle serves as a member of the Regional Emergency Response Team (SWAT) as a team Medic/Doctor.
Dr. Wes Kyle received an award from Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo for his role during a call in 2025 while serving as a medic for the regional SWAT team.
“It’s a privilege to serve with the Waterbury Regional Emergency Response Team. Their courage protects our community, and I’m honored to be there to provide emergency care when seconds matter,” said Dr. Kyle.
Dr. Kyle has been volunteering medical support for regional SWAT teams for over a decade, serving as a tactical physician for the North Central Connecticut SWAT team before joining the Waterbury Regional SWAT team. In addition to Waterbury, the Regional SWAT team serves the towns of Wolcott, Watertown, Naugatuck and others.
In the role of SWAT Medic, Dr. Kyle responds to various calls with the SWAT Team and is on hand should officers or civilians require medical care. He completed the Southwest Regional SWAT school training and additional course trainings over time and continues to train with the team regularly.
In addition, Dr. Kyle is a member of the Connecticut Army National Guard. In 2019, he deployed to Afghanistan to run a battalion aid station. Dr. Kyle was deployed again in 2021 as the Battalion Surgeon for the 1-102nd Infantry Regiment in Somalia and Kenya.
