Three nurses at Saint Francis were recently presented with DAISY Awards during Nurses Week. Carolyn Clark, RN, MSICU; Shana Dunn, RN, 7-1; and Shannon Meechan, RN, Emergency Department, were all recognized for making a difference in the lives of their patients and their families.

Carolyn Clark, RN; Shannon Meechan, RN; and Shana Dunn, RN; were recently honored with DAISY Awards.

Carolyn, a nurse in the MSICU, was nominated by the family member of a patient she cared for. This family member stated that Carolyn, “made a point to sit and speak with me, offering kind words and words of wisdom.” The nomination also explained how Carolyn took time out of her day to speak with other members of the family, answered questions, and explained everything that was going on with their loved one. On later visits, Carolyn was not assigned to this patient, but still stopped in to check on the family and assist them if needed. Her nomination concluded by saying, “Carolyn made our first few days in MSICU bearable and really helped us understand what we are and would be facing. She has hugged me in the halls when she has seen me and has stopped in the room to check on us.”

Shana is a nurse on 7-1 and was nominated by a colleague, who said, “Shana is a compassionate nurse who cares about the well-being of the patients and colleges on her unit.” She demonstrates leadership by taking on the charge nurse role on the weekends and mentors and trains new staff without hesitation. Shana’s colleague noted that “her smile and calm demeanor enhance the team spirit. She is intelligent, kind, and a great leader and teacher.”

Shannon, who serves as a nurse in the Emergency Department, was nominated by the family member of a patient. Her nomination noted that “Shannon was so kind, attentive, and understanding.” The family member noted that the patient was scared to go to the hospital, but Shannon restored their trust and the family is grateful that their loved one is not afraid to get help anymore. Shannon made sure the patient felt safe, involved the patient in care decisions, and ensured that not only were their physical needs taken care of, but also their emotional comfort.

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, his family deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. After he passed, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a public way.
