johnson memorial colleaguesMay marked Mental Health Awareness Month and colleagues at Johnson Memorial Hospital did their part to support the awareness efforts by wearing green, the official color of the observance month. By wearing green, colleagues supported the nation-wide mission to raise awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness and reduce the stigma associated with mental health-related matters.

“Colleagues had the idea to support this effort and came together from various departments to do so,” said Michelle Cunha, RN, Emergency Department Nurse Manager at Johnson. “Mental health is often stigmatized, and we want all of our patients, staff, and visitors to know that we support those struggling with their mental health. You never know what someone is silently going through, and our team wanted to help destigmatize and show our support.”

This was the first time Johnson has participated in the Wear Green for Mental Health Day.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mental Health Awareness Month began in 1949, and since its inception has been addressing the challenges faced by millions of Americans living with mental health conditions. Throughout the month, organizations across the country join in the effort to eradicate stigma, extend support, foster public education and advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
