A new farm-themed mural will soon hang in the pediatric waiting room in Saint Mary’s Hospital’s emergency department. Students and teachers from Waterbury Arts Magnet School (WAMS) brought the artwork to the hospital last week. Members of the school’s Key Club created the two-canvas art piece as part of a community service project.
Students, teachers and staff from Waterbury Arts Magnet School delivered a mural, created by Key Club members, to Saint Mary's Hospital emergency department. The mural will hang in the pediatric waiting area.
The Key Club students reached out to Saint Mary’s over the winter months to partner on a project that would benefit patients in some way. With the newly remodeled emergency department, it was determined that colorful artwork would be a welcome touch in the pediatric waiting area. The students, all graduating seniors, designed and developed the barnyard scene. They shared that they wanted the design to be recognizable for little patients and a subject that would make them smile. The 3-by 4-foot painting took the students just over a month to complete.
“It was a wonderful experience. The students were fully engaged and enthusiastic,” said Key Club advisor, James Butler. “We look forward to coordinating with Saint Mary’s again.”
“The mural is colorful, whimsical and beautifully done,” Kim Kalajainen, President of Saint Mary’s said, “it is perfect for the rising number of pediatric patients the emergency department serves.”
