Saint Mary’s Hospital Celebrates Legacy Week

Saint Mary’s Hospital opened its doors in 1909 under the direction of The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Chambéry. Every March, colleagues remember their founding order during Legacy Week. The weeklong celebration includes a Mass on the Feast of Saint Joseph, an Award ceremony and distribution of Zeppoles.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph Legacy Awards recognize colleagues who best exemplify the founding mission of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, “to be a compassionate, healing and supportive presence to patients, visitors and staff, without distinction.” The award is open to all colleagues through nomination by a member of the Management Team and highlights the colleague’s commitment to strive for personal excellence in the workplace while maintaining the highest respect for the well-being and integrity of every person.

Four colleagues were selected to receive the award this year. Jessica Coville, BSN, RN, Peri-Operative Educator in Nursing Professional Development was recognized for consistently modeling our Mission and Core Values. It was noted that Jessica, “goes above and beyond the call of duty, serving as a safety champion and role model to ensure things continue to run smoothly, often volunteering for extra tasks. She is respectful, dedicated, and compassionate.”

Susan Lafreniere, RN, is a nurse in Outpatient Infusion and was nominated for being an exemplary practitioner of nursing, consistently demonstrating reverence for patients. The nomination form for Susan states, “she excels in her ability to care and advocate for patients in all situations. Susan is always upbeat and positive, and always goes above and beyond for her patients and fellow colleagues.”

Renee Smith, BSN, RN, Operations Manager at Naugatuck Valley Surgical Center, was selected for her dedicated, efficient and compassionate role as a leader. Known for its superior patient satisfaction scores, the Surgical Center is run like a well-oiled machine. Renee manages the day-to-day operations at the very busy center while remaining true to the Core Values that define Saint Mary’s care. She is respected and admired by colleagues and patients alike.

Alexander Malakpour, LPN, was chosen as a recipient of the Legacy Award for his kind and compassionate nursing style. He exhibits the core values of Integrity, Reverence, and Safety every day without distinction. Alex spends the entirety of his workday at the bedside caring for patients. The nomination submission for Alex states, “he always remains calm, patient, and supportive. Alex has these Caritas moments every day with every patient.”
