Saint Mary’s Laboratory Educates Providers on New Technology
Pathologist and Medical Director of Microbiology, Jessica Dodge, M.D., facilitates a recent Lunch and Learn on new technology.

Saint Mary’s Hospital’s laboratory hosted a Lunch and Learn recently to educate providers on the benefits of new technology. Pathologist and Medical Director of the Microbiology section of the Laboratory, Jessica Dodge, M.D., conducted the event titled MALDI-TOF (Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry). Saint Mary’s Hospitalists attended the event to better understand how this new technology provides more rapid bacterial and yeast culture results for their patients. Providers also participated in a tour of the Microbiology laboratory and had a chance to interact with medical technologists.

“These kinds of gatherings improve patient care by providing education to clinicians,” said Dr. Dodge. “Events like this also have a way of enhancing collegiality and communication between departments and colleagues.”

Saint Mary’s laboratory has been updating and improving its department over the course of the last several months, including new equipment and a redesign.

Dr. Dodge is scheduled to provide similar education to the Medical Residents during the Noon Medical Conference in late April.
