On September 17, Saint Mary’s Hospital joined healthcare organizations worldwide in recognizing World Patient Safety Day 2026 by lighting the hospital in orange. The annual observance, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), raises awareness about patient safety and encourages healthcare providers to strengthen safe, high-quality care for all patients.

This year’s theme, “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs),” and slogan, “Self-care for life!” highlight the importance of protecting patients living with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases.
Regarding “self-care,” the WHO wanted to recognize “people living in NCDs as partners rather than patients, and positioning safe care as relevant across everyday life, not only within healthcare settings.” Awareness of NCDs matters, but recognizing the lived experience of people with NCDs is equally important. This recognition advances patient care and strengthens treatment plans that fit the realities of people’s lives, including mental health needs, work needs and more.
At Saint Mary’s, patient safety remains at the center of every clinical and operational decision. “World Patient Safety Day serves as an opportunity to recognize the dedication of healthcare professionals who work every day to prevent harm and improve outcomes for patients,” said Robert Roose, MD, MPH, President of Acute Care for Trinity Health Of New England.
