Trinity Health Of New England EMS Supports Successful Active Shooter Training Exercise

On August 19, Trinity Health Of New England EMS, WPD and WFD participated in a large-scale active shooter drill. The WPD and WFD organized the training to strengthen coordination and response efforts among public safety organizations during a critical incident.

“These drills are very important for all our agencies and for the city. The city of Waterbury and its residents can feel safe knowing that all resources in the area have a great working relationship,” said David Lewis, EMS Supervisor, Saint Mary's Hospital.

This multi-agency training not only helps better equip first responders for large-scale emergencies like last year’s mall shooting but also helps prepare for small-scale emergencies. “After the shooting at the mall last year, all agencies agreed that we needed to do more training among all the first responder agencies in Waterbury. These trainings don’t stop at the drills. We have a post-incident critique to go over what things went great and what items need a little more attention,” said Lewis.

These drills will be scheduled approximately once every six months and future drills are expected to involve the Saint Mary’s Hospital Emergency Department for a robust training opportunity.
