Saint Mary’s and the Waterbury community are gearing up to celebrate a citywide Pink Out on Wednesday, October 30. Pink Out’s goal is to raise awareness and funds to provide the underinsured or uninsured in the community with access to breast screening, diagnostics and treatment regardless of financial hardship.

Saint Mary's colleagues mark the 2023 Pink Out Day.

Several years ago, the Waterbury Fire and Police Departments began recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month by designing, printing and selling t-shirts to support local Breast Cancer causes, including Saint Mary’s Breast Screening Fund. This initiative has evolved into a citywide campaign of awareness and fundraising.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast screenings can improve outcomes as early detection reduces the risk of dying from breast cancer and can lead to a greater range of treatment options and lower health care costs. Screenings are available to patients through physicians or clinical referrals.

On October 30, the City of Waterbury will host a community Pink Out press conference. Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski and Saint Mary’s Hospital President, Kim Kalajainen will address organizers and volunteers from the Waterbury Police and Fire Departments as well as the Education Department, area students and other community members at 11:00 a.m. at Waterbury City Hall.

At 1:00 p.m. on October 30, Saint Mary’s colleagues will gather in the Franklin Street cul-de-sac to take a group “Pink Out” photo.
