Committed to addressing the root causes in medical disparities, Saint Mary’s Hospital has been chosen to host the first in Connecticut Black Men In White Coats (BMWC) Youth Summit. The event aims to inspire under-represented youth to enter the field of medicine, as well as providing them networking and mentorship opportunities.
The first in Connecticut Black Men In White Coats Youth Summit to be held on November 9 at the Palace Theatre/UCONN in Waterbury.
Saint Mary’s will host the inaugural Connecticut event at the Palace Theatre, Waterbury with breakout sessions and special exhibits located at the adjacent UCONN Waterbury Campus on Saturday, November 9. The day-long, free program for students from Grade 3 to Post-Baccalaureate will include keynote speakers including Black Men In White Coats founder, Dr. Dale Okorodudu, hands-on sessions for both students and parents, and will culminate with panel discussions from Black Men in White Coats as well as Black Women in White Coats.
In anticipation of the BMWC Youth Summit, Saint Mary’s Hospital is hosting a special screening of the Black Men in White Coats documentary. The 80-minute film offers a front row seat to dissecting the systemic barriers that prevent Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences on our society. The screening will be held on September 24 at 5:30 pm. in the Saint Mary’s Hospital Auditorium.
The BMWC steering committee is also seeking mentors for participating students. Mentors will be assigned to small groups of students, helping them navigate through hands-on activities and sharing lunch together. The commitment involves a time slot between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. Mentoring offers immense value to both students and professionals and can be a deeply rewarding experience. Volunteers are also needed to help throughout the day.
