Saint Mary’s Hospital is proud to welcome its first participant in the Waterbury Promise Plus program. The initiative is designed to give students aspiring to become medical professionals, hands‑on experience within our hospital community.

Saint Mary's Hospital welcomes the first Waterbury Promise Plus mentee, Hauwa Mahe.

The new mentorship program offers a college‑level student pursuing a career in medicine the opportunity to work closely with our dedicated health care professionals, gaining exposure to multiple departments while receiving individualized guidance.

Saint Mary’s Hospital’s first-ever participant, Hauwa Mahe, will join us this summer. Hauwa is a rising senior at Southern Connecticut State University. Throughout the summer, Hauwa will spend time across various clinical areas, working directly with our teams to build knowledge and confidence as she continues her journey in health care. This opportunity will help shape her understanding of patient care, clinical teamwork, and the specialty she is passionate about, Labor and Delivery.

“The mission of this mentorship program is to tailor the experience to the student’s journey,” said Robert Roose, MD, MPH, President, Saint Mary’s. “There are different pieces that connect to different types of care.”

Echoing that idea, Shawna Edwards, DNP, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer emphasized, “It is important to understand all aspects of health care in conjunction with what you are focusing on. This is an individualized experience, think of it like the dress rehearsal for the job. It’s a way to learn the intricacies of what you’re going into.”

Please join us in welcoming Hauwa to Saint Mary’s Hospital as we launch this inspiring new program and continue our commitment to supporting the next generation of health care professionals.
