Oscar Zelaya, RN, a nurse in the Saint Francis Emergency Department, recently celebrated his 50th anniversary as a colleague at the hospital.
Oscar started his career on the Mount Sinai campus when he was 17 years old, working as an orderly in the emergency room. He continued working weekends as an orderly throughout his college days, as he was earning degrees in mathematics and economics. After earning his degrees, Oscar began teaching at a local college where he started taking nursing classes.
Oscar received his nursing degree in 1997, while continuing his full-time career at a bank, and working per diem in the Saint Francis Emergency Department. He retired from his banking career in 2019 but has remained a dedicated emergency nurse at Saint Francis.
Emergency Department leadership and charge nurses recognized Oscar with a plaque to commemorate his dedication to patient care. Congratulations to Oscar on this tremendous accomplishment!
