This summer, the Student Nurse Internship (SNI) program at Saint Francis Hospital offered an exceptional opportunity for nursing students entering their senior year to gain real-world clinical experience. Over eight weeks, these future nurses were paired with experienced RN preceptors, following their schedules and learning to manage complex patient assignments with confidence and care.

SNIs became fully integrated members of the patient care team, collaborating closely with registered nurses and unlicensed personnel. This immersive experience allowed them to develop critical skills in patient care coordination, interdisciplinary communication, and clinical decision-making – while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of the nursing profession.

A standout feature of the program was the opportunity to observe nursing practice in high-acuity specialty areas, including the cardiac catheterization lab, critical care units, main OR, cardiovascular OR, and Emergency Department. These experiences were made possible through the generous support and collaboration of nursing leaders across the organization.

In addition to clinical exposure, SNIs participated in a professional development workshop focused on goal setting, effective communication using the SBAR format, interview preparation, and career growth strategies. The workshop concluded with a spirited round of Nursing Family Feud, reinforcing key concepts through teamwork and friendly competition.

“Marion and I extend our sincere thanks to all who welcomed and mentored our interns,” said Melissa Mulvey, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, CV-BC, Nursing Professional Development Specialist, Center for Nursing Education & Practice Innovation. “We wish all of our SNI program participants a successful academic year ahead!”

The program is co-led by Melissa and Marion James, MSN, RN, Nursing Professional Development Specialist.
