Malaika Dewes, MPH, is just a month into her position as Administrative Fellow at Saint Francis Hospital for Fiscal Year 2026 but has already felt – and made – an impact.

Malaika Dewes is currently serving as an Administrative Fellow at Saint Francis Hospital.

A Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) candidate at New York Medical College, Malaika previously worked in health research and community-based health equity initiatives contributing to national and statewide quality improvement projects. Over the past month, she has had the privilege of shadowing the Executive Leadership Team at Saint Francis, gaining direct insight into hospital operations, strategy, and decision-making. Under the guidance of her preceptors, Valerie Powell-Stafford, President, Hartford Market, and Mike Ryan, Vice President of Operations, she has been able to see first-hand how leadership translates vision into action. Malaika was instrumental in coordinating the region-wide Culture and Commerce Vendor Market in celebration of National Black Business Month.

A native of Spring Valley, N.Y., Malaika holds an MPH in Health Policy and Management from SUNY Downstate and a BS in Biology with a Neuroscience minor from the University at Albany.

“Applying to an administrative fellowship was a deeply reflective and competitive process that allowed me to align my values with organizations committed to equitable care,” said Malaika. “Stepping into this role has been both an exciting challenge and a rewarding opportunity!”

Applications for FY27 Administrative Fellowships are now open.
