Saint Francis Hospital and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital recently celebrated the graduation of the Summer 2024 Nurse Residency Program cohort. These dedicated nurse residents successfully completed the yearlong program, representing a wide range of clinical specialties including congestive heart failure, cardiovascular care, emergency medicine, operating room, oncology, neuroscience, and women and infants services.

The most recent cohort of the Nurse Residency Program, which represented a wide range of clinical specialties, recently celebrated the completion of their yearlong program.

Throughout the program, the nurse residents cultivated strong professional relationships, sharpened their time management abilities, and deepened their clinical expertise. Interactive learning experiences such as a Jeopardy-style patient management game, fostered teamwork and engagement. Residents also explored essential topics like medication safety, prevention of hospital-acquired conditions through case study presentations, and advancing health equity.

A cornerstone of the program is the completion of evidence-based quality improvement initiatives. This year’s cohort tackled critical healthcare challenges through initiatives such as:

  • Enhancing Nurse-NA Coordination for Better Glycemic Control in Diabetic Patients
  • The Impact of Specialized Patient Education on Nurse Confidence
  • The Impact of Timely Meal Tray Delivery on Egress Results
  • Improving Compliance of Capping Peripheral Intravenous Catheters in the Emergency Department
  • Troubleshooting IVs for Patients with Limited Peripheral Access
  • Enhanced Recovery After Cesarean (ERAC)
  • Optimizing Nurse Efficiency Through Proper Supply Management
  • Increasing Nurse Confidence in Cardiac Telemetry Transport
  • Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention in the Operating Room

In recognition of their exceptional guidance, five preceptors and mentors were honored by the graduating residents as outstanding contributors to their professional journey.

“Watching these nurses grow into confident, compassionate professionals over the past year has been truly inspiring,” said Kaitlyn Savicki, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, Nursing Professional Development Specialist, Center for Nursing Education & Practice Innovation. “Their dedication to learning and improving patient care reflects the very best of what nursing stands for.”

Co-led by Kaitlyn and Melissa Mulvey, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, CV-BC, the Nurse Residency Program continues to empower new nurses with the tools, mentorship, and support needed to thrive in their careers. The program not only fosters professional development but also reinforces the hospital’s commitment to excellence in nursing practice.
