John Griskewicz, RN, a nurse on 8-9 at Saint Francis Hospital, was recently honored with a DAISY Award for making a difference in the lives of his patients and their families.
John, a nurse on 8-9, was honored for his skillful, compassionate care and making a difference in the lives of his patients.
John was nominated by a colleague who said, “he embodies the true essence of compassionate, skillful, and selfless nursing care. He is not just a nurse, he is a beacon of hope, a source of strength, and an unwavering advocate for his patients. From the moment he steps onto the unit, his presence brings a sense of calm and confidence to both his colleagues and patients. His clinical expertise is second to none, but it is his kindness, empathy and dedication that truly set him apart.”
John’s nomination detailed a recent event in which he noticed changes in a patient’s status and his assessment and clinical instinct allowed swift action to save the patient from an unfortunate outcome. The patient, who was already anxious about their recovery, felt reassured by John’s presence as he held the patient’s hand and explained everything in simple terms.
The colleague who nominated John noted, “that moment where sharp clinical judgement, rapid decision making, and true compassion merged is why he is not just an exceptional nurse, but a lifesaver. His ability to turn a difficult situation into one filled with dignity, care, and humanity is what makes him the absolute best. His colleagues admire his leadership, his patients trust him wholeheartedly, and his community is better because of him. Nursing is not just a profession for him, it is his calling.”
The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the autoimmune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, his family deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. After he passed, they felt compelled to say “thank you” to nurses in a public way.
