Saint Francis Hospital and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital recently honored the graduation of its latest Nurse Residency Program cohort. These nurse residents successfully completed the yearlong program, representing diverse clinical areas such as the Emergency Department, main Operating Room, medical-surgical units, oncology, behavioral health, and surgical cardiology service lines.

Nurse residents representing several clinical areas successfully completed the yearlong program.

These nurse residents built strong professional connections throughout the program, enhanced their time management skills, and expanded their clinical knowledge. Engaging activities, such as a Jeopardy-style patient management game, encouraged collaborative learning. Residents also explored key topics, including medication safety, preventing hospital-acquired conditions through case study presentations, and health equity.

A highlight of the program was the completion of evidence-based quality improvement projects, where residents addressed critical issues in healthcare. These included promoting patient safety through effective communication, enhancing fall prevention strategies in critical care areas, improving the bedside handoff process, overcoming barriers to medication barcode scanning in the Emergency Department, and utilizing debriefing tools to better manage restraint and seclusion in pediatric psychiatric care. Other areas of focus included increasing staff comfort with chest tube management and exploring the impact of bedside handoff practices on patient satisfaction scores.

“This milestone marks an important chapter in the careers of these new nurses, and we couldn’t be prouder of their growth and achievements,” said Kaitlyn Savicki, MSN, RN, Center for Nursing Education and Practice Innovation, who co-leads the Nurse Residency Program alongside Melissa Mulvey, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, CV-BC.

The Nurse Residency Program continues to provide nurse residents with the tools and support needed to thrive in their nursing careers. This program not only fosters professional development, but also reinforces the hospital’s commitment to cultivating excellence in nursing practice.
