Saint Mary’s Expands Surgical Team with Addition of Third Surgical Robot
Clinical colleagues test drive the da Vinci Xi robot during the Open House and Demonstration.

Saint Mary’s Hospital hosted an open demonstration of the latest da Vinci Robotic Xi Surgical System on Thursday, November 30. The open house and demonstration was open to colleagues and the public.

Visitors were able to sit at a console and drive the robot themselves. The opportunity to maneuver the robotic arms through a surgical process provided an interactive experience that best illustrated the fluidity and precision of the robot.

Saint Mary’s is adding a third da Vinci robot to complement its growing team of specialty surgeons and meet the growing demand for robotic surgery. The newest Xi robot will join the existing “team” of robots used for a variety of procedures including hernia repairs, colon resections, bariatric surgeries, as well as urologic and gynecological procedures.

This system is the most advanced surgical system available, providing patients minimally invasive surgery with a number of benefits, including smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times. Procedures are performed with tiny instruments that move like a human hand but with a greater range of motion. A 3-D high-definition camera magnifies the surgical area to ten times what the human eye can see, giving the surgeon a clear view.
