Your Stories: Wellcome Community Teaching Kitchen Opens in Hartford
September 16, 2024Categories: Organizational Updates
Calling all cooks! The Community Health and Well-Being Team is pleased to announce the opening of the “Wellcome Community Teaching Kitchen” in the Curtis D. Robinson Center for Health Equity, located at 659 Tower Avenue on the Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital campus.
Located on the Mount Sinai campus, the Teaching Kitchen is seeking volunteers to help lead free cooking classes.
Beginning this fall, the Wellcome Community Teaching Kitchen will be offering free cooking classes for patients and community residents. The program promotes wellness at every level – mind, body, and spirit, extending beyond teaching cooking skills by bridging the gap between traditional medicine and the use of food as medicine in the prevention, treatment, and management of disease. Community Health Workers, in partnership with experienced Registered Dieticians, provide guidance, advice on culturally appropriate foods, and tailored nutrition plans to suit individual and family needs.
The approach emphasizes the importance of diet and lifestyle alongside medical treatments for handling chronic diseases. Informative workshops, cooking demos, and classes will help attendees better understand nutrition and make informed choices. Opportunities to connect with local healthcare providers and organizations will also help foster a supportive network.
Colleagues who enjoy cooking healthy meals, teaching, and giving back to the community are encouraged to volunteer at the Wellcome Community Teaching Kitchen. Those interested should contact Kartia Frazier, CHWB Office Coordinator at Kartia.Frazier@TrinityHealthOfNE.org.
