On the eve of National Gun Violence Awareness Day, leaders from across the country gathered in a special convening at the White House to outline their vision for future gun violence prevention efforts. Participants were made up of the National Health Care CEO Council on Gun Violence Prevention & Safety and other health care leaders from across the country, including Trinity Health Of New England’s President and CEO, Montez Carter, PharmD, FACHE, who was invited as the Trinity Health representative.
The meeting, hosted by the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, brought together more than 80 health care executives who continue to invest in gun safety public health awareness efforts, hospital-based violence intervention programs, and other strategies to address this public health crisis.
“As caregivers on the front lines of keeping our patients and communities safe, we are deeply committed to building upon our existing collaborative efforts to end gun violence,” said Carter. “When a person becomes a victim of gun violence, there is a ripple effect on their family, loved ones, and the community. We are grateful for the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention for allowing us the opportunity to come together as a health care community, to elevate this vital conversation, and to offer potential solutions at a national level.”
Gun violence remains a pressing public health crisis facing communities across the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fatal Injury Data, more than 100 Americans are killed by guns every day, and firearms are listed as the leading cause of death for American children and teens.
