From Springfield to Waterbury, Trinity Health Of New England celebrated National Doctors’ Day with special events for physicians and advanced practice providers.

At Johnson Memorial Hospital, physicians met with Springfield Market leaders and enjoyed breakfast at the hospital and at the S. Prestley and Helen Blake Ambulatory Care Center in Enfield. At Mercy Medical Center, a luncheon was held for physicians and advanced practice providers in the Deliso Conference Center with a special guest – “Boomer,” the mascot for the Springfield Falcons was available for photos. In Hartford, the celebration at Saint Francis Hospital featured a buffet style luncheon that included special Doctors’ Day decorations and a visit by “Dillon,” the mascot for the Hartford Athletic and providers at Mount Sinai Hospital enjoyed a special lunch offering. Saint Mary’s Hospital marked Doctors’ Day with a luncheon event in the Conference Center Building. Physicians and advanced practice providers enjoyed a delicious hot meal with an opportunity to sit and chat with fellow providers. Grab and go sandwiches were also available for those unable to stay.

The first Doctors’ Day observance took place in Winder, Georgia, in 1933, when Eudora Brown Almond decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. The wife of a physician herself, Eudora mailed greeting cards to all the doctors she knew and placed flowers on the graves of deceased doctors. She chose March 30 for her observance as it marked the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. Eudora's simple gestures of gratitude and kindness took hold over the years, gaining momentum and support across the country. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed legislation establishing March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
