National Doctors’ Day has a rich history dating back to 1933 in Winder, Georgia. The observance was created by Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician, to recognize the dedication and service of doctors. She commemorated the day by sending greeting cards to physicians and placing flowers on the graves of those who had passed. the date she chose, March 30, honors the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. The tradition became a national observance in 1990, when President George H.W. Bush signed legislation officially establishing March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
