Every Wednesday night, some Saint Mary’s colleagues are getting exercise, teambuilding and perhaps talking a little trash. Saint Mary’s Basketball has returned. All colleagues and staff are invited to join friendly pickup basketball games on Wednesday nights from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Yeshiva K’tana of Waterbury gym, (the former Sacred Heart High School) located on South Elm Street across from the colleague parking garage.
Colleagues from all departments come together every Wednesday night to shoot a few hoops and talk a little rubbish.
According to organizer, Travis Raboin, Site Director, Clinical Engineering, all Saint Mary’s colleagues are invited to attend the free pick-up games. Depending on the numbers, most games are full court. “We’re getting introduced to colleagues and physicians we may not have met before,” said Raboin. “It’s great walking down the hall and seeing someone you play with. You end up finding out what their role at the hospital is and it develops a kind of camaraderie.”
Sports and games can boost colleague morale by providing a fun and engaging activity that encourages teamwork, communication and social interaction. The Journal of Sports Sciences has conducted research that shows that there are a number of proven health outcomes, as well as organizational benefits. Researchers found that company team sports can lead to better performance at work and more effective social interactions. They are also a way in which hierarchical barriers can be broken down, leading to improved trust, communication, approachability, collaboration and appreciation of diversity.
