Third graders at Judson Elementary School in Watertown have been studying the human body as part of their English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum. ELA is a set of standards and teaching methods that help students develop the skills they need to become literate adults. As a culminating activity for the unit, their teacher, Kathleen Washburn, is preparing an end of unit celebration that will transform their classroom into operating rooms. Ms. Washburn recently reached out to Saint Mary’s Hospital asking for support with medical supply items to use as part of her classroom transformation.

Kathleen Washburn, Judson Elementary teacher, receives a donation of OR items from Saint Mary’s Joan Thompson.

Saint Mary’s Director of Surgical Services, Joan Thompson, recently visited Judson Elementary with boxes of operating room items to help the third graders become “surgeons.”

“We were happy to offer supplies to support one of our local schools with their early learning of the human body,” said Thompson. “Contributing to a fun and engaging endeavor that highlights healthcare in our community is a joy.”

Ms. Washburn was extremely grateful for the donation from Saint Mary’s and is certain her students will feel like “real surgeons” on the day of their celebration.
