A group of Saint Mary’s Hospital colleagues have formed a Gardening Club to tackle several small beautification projects around campus. Their aim is to come together as a community to make small improvements to identified areas.

Garden Club is open to all colleagues. Email Stephanie Nelson for more information.

Stephanie Nelson, MSN, RN, Director of Safety, Quality and Performance Improvement pulled the group together with the blessings and direction of the executive leadership team. With guidance from master gardener and PACU nurse, Amy Dumschott, the club started with a refresh of the raised beds on Union Street. They recently weeded, added new soil and planted a variety of herbs, vegetables and flowers.

“The important thing for us is to do it as a community. We try to take 30 minutes out of our day, when we have time, to get outside and put our hands in the soil,” said Nelson. “It does wonders when you can get outside of the building. It’s a good feeling.”

According to the National Institutes of Health there is growing evidence that exposure to plants and green space, and gardening is good for your mental and physical health. The study cites the combination of physical activity with social interaction and exposure to nature and sunlight.

For its next project, the club has its eyes and hands ready to plant mums near the memorial walk. The Garden Club is looking for more members to join their ranks. They are also welcoming donations of plants. For more information email Stephanie Nelson at Stephanie.Nelson@TrinityHealthOfNE.org.
