Saint Mary’s Hospital recently welcomed, Emily Gammill, PharmD, as an Infectious Diseases Pharmacist. With this addition, the Department of Infectious Diseases has taken its Antimicrobial Stewardship program to the next level. The goal of antimicrobial stewardship looks to optimize clinical outcomes while minimizing unintended consequences of antimicrobial use including toxicity, selection of pathogenic organisms and the emergence of resistance.

Emily Gammill, PharmD, is Saint Mary's Hospital's Infectious Diseases Pharmacist.

An effective Antimicrobial Stewardship Program requires a multidisciplinary team approach with core members including infectious disease physicians, and a clinical pharmacist with training in infectious diseases, and other clinical colleagues. Core strategies of the program include prospective audit with direct intervention and feedback to the provider, as well as antimicrobial preauthorization. An antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist is integral to implementation of the program by reviewing antibiotic use hospital-wide, optimizing the use of restricted antimicrobials, and ensuring program compliance with national standards.

As a pharmacist, Gammill specializes in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship. She is passionate about delivering high quality, team-based patient care. She aims to improve the safe and effective use of antimicrobials through dosing optimization and limiting unnecessary antimicrobial exposure. Gammill’s professional interests include antimicrobial stewardship, gram-negative resistance, and providing care to underserved patient populations.
