Benjamin Doolittle, M.D., M. Div., physician leader in Saint Mary’s Hospital’s Family Health Center, has been an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ since 1991. In all his years as a minister he does not recall ever baptizing one of his patients. That is until now.
Benjamin Doolittle, M.D., M. Div., is pictured with baby Jrue and his mother Sharline.
On January 7, Dr. Doolittle baptized perhaps one of his youngest patients, four-month-old baby Jrue. The baptism came at the request of baby Jrue’s mother, Sharline, who had given birth to him at Saint Mary’s.
“Thinking about holistic care and bringing a healing presence into the community,” said Dr. Doolittle. “This was a wonderful, loving thing to be able to do for this family.”
Growing up in a faith filled family from Jamaica, Sharline looked forward to having her baby baptized and upon learning that Dr. Doolittle was an ordained minister, she simply asked him if he would perform this blessed rite.
“This is special. It is a sacred moment telling us that we are beloved by God,” expressed Dr. Doolittle.
Sharline is grateful to Dr. Doolittle for the care he has provided to Jrue, who overcame serious medical issues post-partum. Now doing very well, Jrue passed his well-baby visit with flying colors and a blessing.
