Colleagues from Mercy Medical Center took to the ice at the Mass Mutual Center for the Springfield Thunderbirds’ 2024 Hospital Bed Races. Dressed in costumes that reflected their names, the Mercy teams were named “Mercy Minions” and “Mercy Thoracic Lung Cancerlers.”

The “Mercy Minions” take to the ice to compete in the Springfield Thunderbirds’ 2024 Hospital Bed Races.

The bed races required colleagues from competing hospitals to push their hospital beds down the ice and back between periods of the Thunderbirds’ game against the Hartford Wolf Pack before a sold-out crowd of 6,793. In a close race, the “Mercy Minions” took second place in the entertaining competition, just missing out on winning the “Golden Bed Pan” trophy. The “Mercy Thoracic Lung Cancerlers” also set up a table on the Mass Mutual Center concourse to educate and spread awareness of Trinity Health Of New England’s Thoracic Oncology Program.

The Hospital Bed Races were part of the AHL team’s annual Hockey Fights Cancer Night, an NHL effort that unites the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families.
