Conversations about the goals of care or end-of-life issues can be difficult not only for patients and their families, but also for providers. When the need for an ethics consult arises, time is of the essence. According to Mike Rogers, PhD, MA, STL, Mission Leader for the Springfield and Harford Markets, TogetherCare has simplified the process and ultimately made it more timely.

Mike Rogers, PhD, MA, STL, Mission Leader for the Springfield and Harford Markets, pauses for a moment in the Mercy chapel.

“As someone with responsibilities across multiple ministries, I'm now able to easily see consults entered from Saint Francis, Mercy, and Johnson in one place and then use the tools to communicate with the ethics facilitators in each ministry,” said Mike. “Previously, providers and nurses may have been unsure about where to go to request an ethics consult. Now, it’s as easy as submitting any other ancillary consult request in TogetherCare and it comes to the team immediately.”

Using TogetherCare, Mike is able to bring together members of any one of three hospital ethics committees and confer with them quickly on a case. “This really gives us a great deal of flexibility to address ethics cases promptly and in a manner which is able to best leverage the strengths of all members of the team,” he said. “At the same time, TogetherCare gives us the chance to attend to each of our patients and their families in a manner consistent with our core value of reverence.”
