Mercy colleagues in the Emergency Department and the Family Life Center recently collaborated under the guidance Nurse Educators Callie Bane, MSN,RN; Ashlee Boyle, MSN, RN; and Kailin Lancour, MSN, RN, to simulate the transfer of a critically ill pregnant patient from the Emergency Department to the Family Life Center.
Colleagues in the Mercy ED and FLC train to respond to a patient emergency.
17 new hires practiced providing safe and effective care to a 39-week pregnant patient complaining of shortness of breath who ultimately required life-saving interventions. Matt Cauchon, D.O., ED Physician, led the teams with managing the patient’s airway, fetal assessment, and initiating CPR. The scenario was run back-to-back with two different teams for repetition and continual learning through hands-on practice and observation.
“Preparation is vital because an emergency situation can arise without warning,” said Ashlee Boyle, MSN, RN, Nurse Educator and PALS Coordinator, Emergency Department, Mercy Medical Center. “This training was designed to help our new colleagues learn how to respond when one of our maternity patients starts to have difficulty breathing. When every minute counts, it’s important to react without hesitation to ensure the patient’s safety.”
