Mercy Medical Center recently partnered with The Privilege Institute as part of its STEAMVE$TMENTS Financial Literacy Camp, a program dedicated to preparing youth for the jobs of the future in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.
Eddie Moore Jr., PHD Founder/Executive Director of The Privilege Institute takes a “selfie” with Mercy leaders and students who participated in the program.
On day two of the summit, students in grades 7 through 12 gathered at Mercy for a powerful session on the world of health care careers, the role of STEM, and the importance of financial literacy and wellness.
This was more than just a career panel. It was a chance for students to sit face-to-face with professionals who live and breathe health care every day. These leaders included Kelly Chevalier, Director of Emergency Services; Scott Frink, Department Chair & Assistant Professor, Respiratory Care, Springfield Technical Community College; Melissa Kline, Manager, Nursing Professional Practice and Education; Jill Legates, Regional Director, Rehabilitation Services; Lisa Parent, Regional Manager of Clinical Pharmacy; Vikram Sondhi, Medical Director, Internal Medical Services; and Richard Wojtowicz, Regional Director, Pharmacy Services.
Each colleague shared their personal journey, what inspired them to enter health care, how STEM has shaped their roles, and the real opportunities available for students who may one day follow in their footsteps. From education to evolving salaries, from the challenges of the past to the possibilities of the future, the panel painted an honest and hopeful picture of what’s ahead.
“Mercy chose to participate in this event because it is important to inspire young people to pursue careers in health care. It is hard for high school students to imagine all the opportunities that exist. There is no better way to educate these students than to have a group of dedicated professionals talk about their own career paths and provide insightful information about current and future opportunities in health care. Student participants asked many relevant questions, with at least one student sharing that she changed her mind on her original career path and will pursue a different health care career!” said Joanne Ollson, Director, Human Resources Business Partner.
But this wasn’t just about exposure. It was about speaking life into a new generation of youth who might one day be on the frontlines of health care innovation. Students left with more than information and swag bags; they left with vision, confidence, and a reminder that their future is worth investing in.
